The girls wrestling team for Mount Vernon had a very good showing at the OHSAA Sectional held at Licking Valley, finishing in sixth place overall and scoring 84 points as a team.
Ashlynn Brokaw led the way for the Yellow Jackets as she had a strong performance at the 110-pound bracket. She won her first match against Marilynn Mejeur from Delaware Hayes by pinning her in the semi-finals, and then winning the championship against Mirage Haverfield from Madison Plains by technical fall, 17-1. This was the only sectional title won by Mount Vernon.
Khadija Ndow showed tenacity at 170 pounds. She pinned Shayla Lowe from London in the quarter-finals before losing to Evelyn Krauss from Delaware Hayes in the semi-finals. Ndow was able to bounce back and win as she defeated Rayne Dowdy from Teays Valley 6-4 by decision in order to take home 3rd place and qualify for districts.
The other Yellow Jackets that contributed to the team score through consolation round wins were: Luci Parker (100) pinned Alisson Ventura from Olentangy Berlin; Jessie Perez (105) won by major decision 10-0 over Lillia Roesky Grayem from Cardington Lincoln; Mahayley Laverick (130) won by both major decision and pin; Alivia Zimmerman (145) won by technical fall and Joy Morman (155) wrestled tough competitors.
Through the strong showing of Brokaw winning the championship and Ndow finishing 3rd, Mount Vernon was able to qualify multiple individuals for Districts and is thus ensured to have a good representation in the next round of post-season wrestling.
