Mount Vernon’s girls wrestling team finished 25th overall with 32 points at the district tournament.
Big Walnut High School hosted the competition on March 7-8.
The Yellow Jackets’ standout performance among more than 60 schools came from Ashylynn Brokaw, who dominated the 110-pound bracket to claim the district championship. Brokaw pinned December Johnson of Alexander in just 1:09 during the quarterfinals, then rolled to a 15-2 major decision over Delaney Tackett of Olentangy Orange in the semifinals. In the championship bout, she capped her run with an 18-5 major decision against Emma Gorrell of Warren, securing both the district crown and a berth in the state tournament.
Brokaw’s victory accounted for a significant share of Mount Vernon’s team points and marked her as the program’s lone state qualifier. She enters the state meet as one of the most accomplished wrestlers in her division and a serious contender for another title.
Other Yellow Jackets wrestlers also contributed at districts. Khadija Ndow earned a first-round pin at 170 pounds before falling in the quarterfinals and dropping a narrow 8-6 decision in consolation. At 145 pounds, Alivia Zimmerman competed but was eliminated early, while Luci Parker battled at 100 pounds, dropping a close 10-7 decision in the consolation round.
Despite finishing mid-pack in the standings, Brokaw’s championship highlighted Mount Vernon’s progress and demonstrated the program’s growing presence in a highly competitive district.
