Mount Vernon’s 48–39 varsity conference loss to Watkins Memorial echoed their December 19 matchup, when the Warriors slipped past by five on the Jackets’ home floor.
The game occurred on January 30 at Watkins Memorial High School. According to the report, Mount Vernon demonstrated defensive determination with eight steals, matching Watkins Memorial’s total. The Jackets aimed to disrupt passing lanes and force turnovers but struggled offensively, shooting only 32% from the field and 12% from beyond the arc. Despite these challenges, their defensive energy provided moments where they appeared ready to shift momentum.
On rebounds, Mount Vernon secured 27, limiting extra opportunities for their opponents and attempting to ignite transition play. They also achieved some success at the free-throw line, converting 58% of their attempts to mitigate stalled possessions. Although their offense did not fully synchronize, the Jackets’ defensive pressure and persistent effort kept them competitive throughout the game.
Granville and Mount Vernon are scheduled for another varsity conference matchup on February 6 at Mount Vernon’s home court. This meeting follows their thrilling first contest weeks earlier, adding anticipation to the rematch.
In their last encounter on January 10, Mount Vernon narrowly defeated Granville 83–82 in a closely contested game on the road. That one-point victory highlighted both teams’ resilience and set expectations for another tightly contested battle.
