Under the Friday night lights, the Mount Vernon Fighting Jackets left everything on the field, showing fight, grit, and flashes of brilliance in a narrow 21-14 defeat to Marion Harding.

From the opening kickoff, Mount Vernon proved it would not be outworked. Quarterback Mason Richards put the Jackets on his back, igniting the offense with 91 yards on the ground and powering into the end zone twice. Richards also showcased poise through the air, completing 14 of 27 passes for 149 yards, consistently keeping Harding’s defense scrambling.

The Jackets’ ground game was relentless, racking up 155 rushing yards on 40 carries, compared to just 74 for Marion Harding. Time and again, the offensive line surged forward, paving the way for first downs and keeping drives alive. Mount Vernon finished with 16 total first downs, seven more than their opponent, and converted on clutch fourth-down plays to swing momentum in their favor.

If not for costly penalties — 14 flags totaling 117 yards — Mount Vernon might well have controlled the scoreboard in addition to the stat sheet. The Jackets ran 69 plays to Harding’s 40 and outgained them in nearly every offensive category.

Though the final score did not tilt their way, the Fighting Jackets proved they have the weapons, toughness, and firepower to compete with anyone. Next week, they take that energy on the road to Newark, where Richards and his hungry squad aim to finish what they started.
