Mount Vernon’s Luke Mullins competed at 190 pounds in the OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament Division I 2026, representing the Yellow Jackets and gaining valuable state-level experience.
The tournament, held March 13-15 at the Jerome Schottenstein Center, brought together top wrestlers from across Ohio. Participation in this event is considered a significant achievement as athletes must advance through rigorous sectional and district competitions to qualify, according to Manual.
Mullins advanced past his opening-round match by disqualification over Francesco Salvino of Massillon Washington, moving into the quarterfinals. There, he faced eventual state champion Frankie Pieffer of St. Edward, falling by technical fall to one of the tournament’s most dominant competitors. Dropping into the consolation bracket, Mullins continued to fight but was ultimately eliminated after a 15–4 major decision loss to Cameron Fiasco of Lakewood West. His matches demonstrated both his skill and the intensity of Division I competition at the state level.
Overall, Mount Vernon’s wrestling program finished 34th in the tournament. While teammate Mavrik Gregory nearly reached the podium, Mullins’ participation added depth, competitive experience, and growth opportunities for the program. Reaching the state tournament is a significant achievement, as wrestlers must advance through rigorous sectional and district competitions to qualify. Mullins’ experience at 190 pounds not only contributed to the team’s overall showing but also laid a foundation for future success, illustrating the Yellow Jackets’ potential in coming state tournaments.
Mullins’ performance highlighted both individual effort and team progress during this year’s OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament.
