Mount Vernon narrowly defeated Johnstown-Monroe 35-34 in a non-conference football game on Friday night. The victory was largely attributed to a strong rushing attack and effective offensive line performance.
Senior quarterback Mason Richards led Mount Vernon with an impressive display, rushing 21 times for 308 yards and scoring four touchdowns. He also contributed 14 passing yards. According to the team statistics, the Mount Vernon offensive line facilitated significant gains, allowing the team to average 11.8 yards per carry on 33 attempts, culminating in a total of 391 rushing yards.
Additional contributions came from Landon Dawson, who added 22 yards and one touchdown. Luke Mullins gained 48 yards, while Ben Fitzpatrick accumulated 24 total yards. Dammon Wolfe contributed three carries for three yards and added ten yards in punt returns.
On the defensive side, the Yellow Jackets recorded a total of 49 tackles. Mullins, Carter Hill, and K. Schlosser each achieved a sack during the game. Mullins also intercepted a pass that stopped a drive by Johnstown-Monroe.
Mount Vernon kicker Jackson Hite successfully converted all five point-after-touchdown (PAT) attempts, which proved crucial for securing the win. With this victory, Mount Vernon’s record improves to 2-2 as they prepare for their next matchup.
