Mount Vernon’s Fighting Jackets proved their toughness Friday night, overpowering Newark 24-7 with a relentless ground game and a defense that refused to break.
The Jackets dominated statistically, running 59 plays for 294 total yards compared to Newark’s 33 plays for 119 yards. Mount Vernon averaged 5.0 yards per play and leaned on its bruising rushing attack, piling up 252 yards on 50 attempts. Newark was limited to just 55 rushing yards on 12 tries.
Quarterback Mason Richards continued to showcase his dual-threat ability. On the year, he has passed for 147 yards while rushing for 210 yards on 43 carries, driving the Jackets’ offense. Wideout Dammon Wolfe has emerged as a reliable target, catching five of six passes this season for 58 yards.
Defensively, Mount Vernon shut down Newark’s passing game, allowing just 64 yards through the air on 8-of-21 attempts while forcing three interceptions. The Jackets also picked up 14 first downs to Newark’s five and converted four of five fourth-down tries to keep drives alive.
Even penalties couldn’t slow them — despite 11 flags for 72 yards, Mount Vernon controlled the pace and walked off the field with a convincing 24-7 victory.
The Jackets’ formula was clear: run the ball, play hard-nosed defense, and seize momentum.
