Mt. Vernon emerged victorious over Watkins Memorial with a narrow 28-27 win on Friday night, overcoming a two-touchdown deficit to clinch a dramatic victory against the Warriors.
The game occurred on October 3 at Watkins Memorial High School in Pataskala, Ohio. The Yellowjackets improved their season record to 5-2 with this road victory.
According to reports, after trailing 21-7 in the second quarter, Mt. Vernon mounted a comeback driven by a consistent rushing attack and an unwavering defensive effort. Landon Dawson’s short rushing touchdown and Mason Richards’ score just before halftime reduced the deficit to seven points. The Yellowjackets then gained momentum in the third quarter by recovering an onside kick and subsequently connecting on a touchdown pass to level the score. Shortly thereafter, defensive lineman Nolan White returned a Watkins Memorial fumble 15 yards for a touchdown, giving Mt. Vernon the lead permanently. The defense remained resolute in the final moments as the Warriors’ two-point conversion attempt failed, securing the one-point win for Mt. Vernon.
Looking ahead, Mt. Vernon is set to host Licking Heights (1-6) on October 10 at 7 p.m., as they aim to continue their midseason momentum.
