Mount Vernon delivered a strong performance at the Upper Arlington Division I Sectional, finishing second overall with 218 points in an 11-team field.
The Yellow Jackets boys wrestling team trailed only Upper Arlington High School, which won the team title with 247.5 points, while Mount Vernon finished comfortably ahead of Big Walnut High School, which placed third with 198 points.
Mount Vernon crowned four sectional champions: Gabe Thomas (144 lbs), Mavrik Gregory (157 lbs), Luke Mullins (190 lbs), and Trevor Jones (215 lbs). Each dominated their brackets and will enter districts as top seeds.
The Yellow Jackets also showed depth with third‑place finishes from Gabriel Kiser (106 lbs), Tye Thomas (132 lbs), and Preston Hempfield (150 lbs). These wrestlers battled through tough brackets to secure district berths, ensuring Mount Vernon representation across weight classes.
The team’s balance—from lightweights to upper divisions—was key to their success. While host Upper Arlington edged them out for the team title, Mount Vernon’s mix of champions and qualifiers positions the Yellow Jackets as one of the most dangerous squads heading into districts.
With seven district qualifiers and four sectional champions, Mount Vernon is poised for a strong postseason run and multiple state berths.
The Yellow Jackets will compete in the district tournament on Friday, March 6, and Saturday, March 7, at Hilliard Darby High School.
