Yellow Jackets zip up the cold, leaving Blue Devils frozen in 5–3 finish

Mt. Vernon zipped up the jacket and snapped it tight in Monday’s conference baseball matchup, sending a cold gust across the diamond that left the Blue Devils shivering as the Yellow Jackets rallied late for a 5–3 extra‑innings win.

The showdown unfolded on Monday, May 4, as the close match played out on Zanesville’s home field.

According to MaxPreps, Mount Vernon trailed ealry after Zanesville scratch accross single runs in the third, fifth, and seventh, but the Yellow Jackets kept counterpunching, tying the game with a seventh‑inning push before breaking through with two decisive runs in the ninth; Nolan Hershberger delivered two hits and two RBI, Greyson Deem added two hits and three stolen bases, and freshman pitcher Zach Beck slammed the door with 2.2 scoreless, hitless innings in relief to secure the win.

Next up, Mount Vernon returns home for MVBA Night and Dollar Dog Day as the Yellow Jackets host Lakewood in a conference matchup on Wednesday, May 6, at 5 p.m.

The last time Mount Vernon and Lakewood met was on May 7, 2025, when the Yellow Jackets claimed a 5–2 road conference win behind steady pitching and timely offense.
